A law during 1840’s required the African American Families to have post bonds and permits in order to stay in Greene County.
Horace B. Duncan, Fred Coker, and Will Allen were hanged and burned beneath replica of Statue of Liberty on April 13, 1906. A lot of black families left in 1906 after the Triple Lynching.
In 1955, Lincoln school was converted to Junior High school “Eastwood” White parents complained about their children’s attendance at a “Negro school”.
Almost all the street names in Springfield were changed and renamed by the city. Freedmen’s school consisted of two white teachers Miss Emeline Howard and Miss Letitia Townsend and about 150-160 African American students.

During 1967-1972, racial jurisdiction was gradually eliminated.
Bishop Brown played on a baseball team since he could not get a city license to become a plumber. The African Americans were not allowed to obtain licenses.

In an African American Phone Directory, a letter N was marked by the businesses that were hiring African Americans. There was also a list of hotels and restaurants that provided services for them.
Discrimination still exist today in Springfield regarding jobs and housing.
The Lincoln/ Eastwood School is currently Graff-Uo-Tech. Some schools like Central High School are still segregated.
